About this tool

If you have ever needed to extract a single chapter from a large PDF report, or separate a multi-page scan into individual files, you know how frustrating it is to find that every free online tool wants you to upload your document to their server first. This PDF splitter is different — it runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device.

The tool loads your PDF and displays every page as a numbered tile in a visual grid. You can click individual tiles to select the pages you want, type a range expression like 1-3, 5, 8-10 and press Apply, or use the All / None / Invert buttons to quickly change your selection. Once you are happy with your selection, two output options are available.

Extract selected packages only the pages you chose into a single clean PDF — perfect for pulling out a contract appendix, a specific set of slides, or any continuous or non-continuous subset of pages. Split all to ZIP creates one PDF file per page for the entire document and bundles them into a ZIP archive — ideal when you need each page as its own standalone file for distribution, printing, or individual editing.

Everything runs locally using the open-source pdf-lib library. There are no server costs, so there are no file size limits, no daily quotas, no premium plans, and no watermarks. The tool also works offline once the page has loaded.

How to Use

  1. 1
Upload your PDFDrag your PDF file onto the drop zone, or click it to open a file picker. The tool accepts one PDF at a time. After uploading, every page appears as a numbered tile in the grid below — no waiting, the grid renders immediately.
  2. 2
Select pages by clicking the gridClick any numbered tile to select that page. A purple checkmark appears on selected tiles and the toolbar updates to show how many pages are selected. Click a selected tile again to deselect it. You can select any combination of pages in any order.
  3. 3
Or use the range input for faster selectionType a page range into the input field and click Apply (or press Enter). Ranges support individual numbers (5), hyphenated spans (3-7), and comma-separated combinations (1-3, 5, 8-10). The grid instantly highlights the matching tiles. Use the All, None, and Invert buttons to quickly change the entire selection.
  4. 4
Extract selected pages to a single PDFClick the purple "Extract N pages" button in the toolbar. The browser creates a new PDF containing only your selected pages in the original order, and downloads it as originalname-extracted.pdf. For most documents this completes in under a second.
  5. 5
Or split every page into a ZIP archiveClick the "Split all → ZIP" button to create one PDF per page for the entire document. All individual page PDFs are bundled into a ZIP file and downloaded as originalname-split.zip. Files inside the ZIP are named with zero-padded numbers (page-01.pdf, page-02.pdf…) so they sort correctly in any file manager.
  6. 6
Load a different PDF without refreshingClick the "Change PDF" button in the toolbar to clear the current document and return to the drop zone. Your previous selection and results are cleared, and you can immediately load a new PDF. There is no need to refresh the page between files.

Common Use Cases

📃
Extract a single chapter or section
Large reports, legal documents, and eBooks often run to hundreds of pages, but you only need one chapter. Select the page range for that chapter, hit Extract, and share or print just those pages — without the recipient having to scroll through an entire document to find what they need.
🖨️
Separate scanned multi-page documents
When a batch scan produces a single large PDF and you need each original document as its own file, use Split all to ZIP. Every page becomes an individual PDF, zero-padded and sorted, ready to rename and file. No re-scanning, no manual copy-paste.
📋
Isolate a contract or form page
Contracts often include a signature page, an exhibit, or a schedule that needs to be sent separately. Click the specific page tiles, extract them to a new PDF, and send only what the recipient needs to see — without exposing the rest of the document.
🎨
Prepare individual slides for editing
Presentation PDFs exported from PowerPoint or Keynote contain one slide per page. Split all to ZIP gives you every slide as its own PDF for importing into design tools, sharing individually, or printing at different sizes.
📚
Build a custom reading packet
Teachers and trainers can extract non-contiguous pages from multiple sources — a definition from page 3, a diagram from page 12, exercises from pages 18-21 — and combine them into a focused handout using the PDF Merger after splitting.
🗂️
Archive documents page by page
Document management systems and compliance archives sometimes require one file per physical page with a specific naming convention. Split all to ZIP produces numbered individual PDFs that are easy to rename and ingest into any DMS or archival workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. This PDF splitter runs entirely in your browser using the open-source pdf-lib JavaScript library. Your file is read from your disk into browser memory, processed locally, and the result is downloaded straight back to your device. Nothing is ever sent over the network. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool will continue to work.

"Extract selected" takes only the pages you have chosen — by clicking on the grid or typing a range — and packages them into a single new PDF file. This is useful when you want to pull out a specific chapter, section, or set of pages. "Split all to ZIP" creates one separate PDF file per page for the entire document, then bundles all of them into a single ZIP archive for download. Use this when you need every page as its own standalone file.

You have two options. First, click directly on the page tiles in the grid — a purple checkmark appears on selected tiles and clicking again deselects them. Second, type a range expression into the range input and click Apply. Range expressions support individual page numbers (e.g. 5), hyphenated ranges (e.g. 3-7), and comma-separated combinations (e.g. 1-3, 5, 8-10). You can also use the All, None, and Invert buttons to quickly change the whole selection at once.

There is no server-enforced file size limit because your file never leaves your device. The practical limit is your browser's available RAM. Most modern computers handle PDFs of several hundred megabytes without trouble. If you are splitting a very large PDF and the browser becomes unresponsive, closing other tabs to free up memory before trying again usually helps.

No watermarks are ever added. The extracted or split PDFs contain only the original page content from your source document. No branding, no "trial version" stamps, no hidden overlays. What was on the original page is exactly what appears in the output.

PDFs with owner-level restrictions (such as printing or copying restrictions) can usually be split without issues. PDFs that require a user password to open cannot be processed — the tool will show an error message for those files. You would need to remove the open password first using a dedicated PDF unlock tool before splitting.

After you upload a PDF, the tool displays every page as a numbered tile in a responsive grid. Each tile shows the page number clearly. Clicking a tile toggles it between selected (highlighted in purple with a checkmark) and deselected. This visual grid lets you see the full scope of the document at a glance and pick pages individually without needing to type a range — especially useful for shorter documents where you want to cherry-pick a few specific pages.

The extracted PDF is named after your original file with "-extracted" appended. For example, if your source file is report.pdf the output will be report-extracted.pdf. When you use Split all to ZIP, the archive is named with "-split.zip" appended, and each individual page inside the ZIP is named with a zero-padded page number such as report-page-01.pdf, report-page-02.pdf, and so on.

Yes. The tool works in any modern mobile browser including Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS. The page grid is responsive and scales to fit smaller screens. Splitting very large PDFs may be slower on phones due to limited RAM compared to a desktop, but for everyday document sizes it works fine.

Yes. Once you have finished with one PDF, click the "Change PDF" button in the toolbar. This clears the current document, selection, and results, and returns you to the drop zone so you can load a new file. There is no need to refresh the page.
